Dobšiná stands on firm historical ground from 1326, when an agreement confirmed by the church chapter at Eger authorised the Bebek family, the lords of Gemer, to settle German miners here. They came on what the charter calls Krupina law — a package of settlement rights named after the town of Krupina, giving incomers their own judge, their own court and a fixed rent instead of the open-ended obligations of a serf. Nobody moves into a cold valley at eight hundred metres to farm; they came because there was ore in the hills, and the terms were good enough to make the journey worth it.
