Celts settled the confluence from about the third century BC, long before anyone built in stone here. From the first to the fourth century AD the crag was held by Roman soldiers: the empire's frontier, the limes, ran down the middle of the Danube, and Devín stood on the far side of it — an outpost pushed across the water to watch the barbarian bank, with the great legionary town of Carnuntum a short way upstream on the Roman side. Archaeologists have uncovered the foundations of a Roman tower of the first century on the hill. Rome pulled back from this frontier around the year 400, and over the next two centuries Slavs settled the region.Na sútoku sa usadili Kelti už okolo 3. storočia pred naším letopočtom, dávno predtým, než tu ktokoľvek staval z kameňa. Od 1. do 4. storočia po Kristovi držali bralo rímski vojaci: hranica ríše, limes, viedla stredom Dunaja a Devín stál na jej odvrátenej strane — vysunutá pevnôstka, ktorá strážila „barbarský“ breh, kým kúsok proti prúdu na rímskej strane ležalo veľké legionárske mesto Carnuntum. Archeológovia tu odkryli základy rímskej veže z 1. storočia. Okolo roku 400 sa Rimania z tejto hranice stiahli a v priebehu nasledujúcich dvoch storočí prišli do kraja Slovania.
