In the thirteenth century a stone castle went up on the crag to guard the western edge of the kingdom. It enters the documents in the middle of that century — the mention usually cited as the first is a charter of 1254 — and it certainly existed in 1271, when King Přemysl Otakar II of Bohemia was fighting Hungary along exactly this stretch of the Danube; the peace signed on 2 July 1271 returned the captured places. In 1326 a castellan of Devín is named — the man who commanded the castle on its lord's behalf — and in 1327 the village below appears as villa Thebyn. Sources disagree about which document is truly the first, which is perfectly normal for a castle of this age.V 13. storočí vyrástol na brale kamenný hrad, ktorý mal strážiť západný okraj kráľovstva. V roku 1326 sa spomína devínsky kastelán, teda muž, ktorý hrad spravoval v mene svojho pána, a v roku 1327 aj dedina pod hradom ako villa Thebyn. Pramene sa nezhodujú v tom, ktorá listina je vlastne prvá; pri hrade takéhoto veku je to úplne bežné.
