Devín stands on a limestone crag at the exact point where the Morava empties into the Danube, with Austria on the far bank. Celts, Romans, the princes of Great Moravia and the kings of Hungary all held this rock in turn; Napoleon’s retreating army blew it up, and nobody ever put it back. What is left is one of the most eloquent ruins in Central Europe.Devín stojí na vápencovom brale presne tam, kde sa Morava vlieva do Dunaja — na druhom brehu je už Rakúsko. Toto bralo držali postupne Kelti, Rimania, veľkomoravské kniežatá aj uhorskí králi; ustupujúce Napoleonovo vojsko ho vyhodilo do vzduchu a nikto ho už nepostavil nazad. Zostala jedna z najvýrečnejších zrúcanín strednej Európy.
