Tornaľa was made the seat of a district in 1853, and in 1873 the railway arrived — the line running along the southern edge of the Ore Mountains from Zvolen towards Košice. That single event created the modern town. The station, the yards and the streets that grew around them are most of what Tornaľa physically is, and it became the political, economic and cultural centre of its stretch of the Slaná. The census of 1880 found 1,115 inhabitants, overwhelmingly Hungarian-speaking; by 1900 there were 1,793.Roku 1853 sa Tornaľa stala sídlom okresu a roku 1873 sem prišla železnica — trať vedúca po južnom okraji Slovenského rudohoria zo Zvolena smerom na Košice. Práve táto jediná udalosť vytvorila moderné mesto. Stanica, koľajiská a ulice, ktoré okolo nich vyrástli, sú väčšinou toho, čím Tornaľa fyzicky je, a stala sa politickým, hospodárskym i kultúrnym strediskom svojho úseku Slanej. Sčítanie roku 1880 tu našlo 1 115 obyvateľov, prevažne maďarsky hovoriacich, roku 1900 už 1 793.
