Starňa, today part of the town, is named in a document of 1235; the settlement that became Tornaľa appears in 1245 under the name Köwy. Those two dates sit on either side of the Mongol invasion of 1241–42, which tore through the Gemer lowlands. Nothing survives to tell us what happened here in those two years — this was open farming country with nowhere to hide — but the flood of charters in the years afterwards, as the king reorganised who owned what, is the reason the place was written down at all.Starňa, dnes súčasť mesta, sa spomína v listine z roku 1235; osada, z ktorej vyrástla Tornaľa, sa objavuje roku 1245 pod menom Köwy.
