1948–1989 Commuters, and a lake in the woodsDochádzanie a jazero v lese

Under communism the whole middle Hron was reorganised around heavy industry, above all the aluminium works built at Žiar nad Hronom in the 1950s, a quarter of an hour upstream. Nová Baňa became in part a commuter town: people worked shifts elsewhere and came home to sleep. The Tajch, the reservoir the old mining engineers had built in the woods to store water power for the mines, turned into the town's swimming lake — industrial equipment repurposed as a summer place, which has happened to a good many things in this region. The mining past moved into the museum in the old town hall on the square.Za socializmu prestavali celé stredné Pohronie okolo ťažkého priemyslu, predovšetkým okolo hlinikárne, ktorú v päťdesiatych rokoch postavili v Žiari nad Hronom štvrťhodinu proti prúdu. Nová Baňa sa čiastočne zmenila na mesto dochádzajúcich: ľudia chodili na zmeny inde a domov sa vracali spať. Tajch — nádrž, ktorú kedysi banskí inžinieri postavili v lesoch ako zásobu vodnej sily pre bane — sa zmenil na mestské kúpalisko, teda z priemyselného zariadenia na letné miesto, čo sa v tomto kraji stalo nejednej stavbe. Banská minulosť sa presťahovala do múzea v starej radnici na námestí.
