Nová Baňa means 'the new mine', and that is exactly what it was: a gold camp opened by burghers from Kremnica and Pukanec, given the rights of a royal town in 1345, rich enough to sit among the seven royal mining towns of central Slovakia. Its shafts drowned before the gold was finished, and the fight against that water gave the town its strangest claim to fame — the first working steam engine on the European mainland, set up here in 1722. The gold is long gone; the machine is what the town is remembered for.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Nothing is recorded in this valley for 1241 — the Mongol invasion passed over forested country with few people in it. What it changed was policy. King Béla IV rebuilt the kingdom with stone castles and invited settlers from German-speaking lands, and among them came miners who understood ore; Kremnica, over the hills, was founded on that wave. It was burghers from Kremnica and Pukanec who came down into this valley when gold was found here. That is how Nová Baňa begins: not with a lord or a saint, but with specialists moving to a strike.Z roku 1241 niet o tejto doline záznamu — mongolský vpád prešiel cez zalesnený kraj, v ktorom žilo málo ľudí.
The place first appears in writing in 1337, under the clumsy Latin name 'nova montanya Schewnyche' — the new mine at Schewnyche. Every later name says the same thing: Nová Baňa in Slovak and Újbánya in Hungarian both mean 'new mine', while the German Königsberg, king's hill, says who owned it. Remember that a first mention is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived — the diggings were older than the parchment. Gold had been found, and miners were already moving in to work it.V písomnostiach sa toto miesto objavuje prvý raz v roku 1337 pod kostrbatým latinským menom „nova montanya Schewnyche“ — nová baňa pri Schewnyche. Všetky neskoršie mená hovoria to isté: slovenská Nová Baňa aj maďarská Újbánya znamenajú novú baňu, kým nemecký Königsberg, kráľova hora, hovorí, komu patrila.
On 8 September 1345 King Louis I confirmed Nová Baňa as a free royal mining town: its miners and burghers answered to the king rather than to any local lord, elected their own council, and kept a share of what came out of the ground. The town joined the group of seven royal mining towns of what is now central Slovakia — Kremnica and Banská Štiavnica among them — which bargained together and defended each other. The second half of the fourteenth century was the boom, the years when the most gold was taken here. A mining town's charter and its ore always arrive together, and they leave together too.8. septembra 1345 potvrdil kráľ Ľudovít I. Novú Baňu ako slobodné kráľovské banské mesto: baníci a mešťania sa zodpovedali kráľovi, nie miestnemu zemepánovi, volili si vlastnú radu a časť vyťaženého si nechávali.
By the fifteenth century the easy ore had been worked out and Nová Baňa was becoming a less attractive place for German miners, who left for better ground elsewhere. This is the pattern of every mining town: the boom lasts two or three generations, and then the shafts must go deeper for less metal. A town founded by specialists filled up instead with people who farmed the warm slopes and cut the woods as well as mining. It never regained the position it had held in the 1300s.V pätnástom storočí bola ľahká ruda vyčerpaná a Nová Baňa prestávala byť pre nemeckých baníkov zaujímavá; odchádzali za lepšou inam. Je to osud každého banského mesta: rozmach vydrží dve-tri generácie a potom treba ísť hlbšie za menším výnosom. Mesto, ktoré založili odborníci, sa napĺňalo ľuďmi, čo popri baniach obrábali teplé svahy a rúbali les. Postavenie zo štrnásteho storočia už nikdy nezískalo späť.
With mining faltering, the other resource here was the forest, and in 1630 one of the oldest glassworks in the Kingdom of Hungary was set up at Stará Huta just outside the town. A glassworks needs three things this valley had in quantity: sand, endless firewood, and potash burned from beech ash. It also eats forest at a frightening rate, which is why such works moved every few decades. Glass rather than gold is what this district would still be making three hundred years later.Keď bane slabli, zostával druhý zdroj — les. V roku 1630 vznikla v Starej Hute kúsok za mestom jedna z najstarších sklární v Uhorsku. Sklárňa potrebuje tri veci, ktorých tu bolo dosť: piesok, nekonečné palivové drevo a potaš vypálený z bukového popola. Zároveň spotrebúva les desivým tempom, a preto sa takéto huty každých pár desaťročí sťahovali. Práve sklo, nie zlato, sa tu bude vyrábať ešte o tristo rokov.
In 1664 Ottoman troops destroyed Nová Baňa. The frontier had crept close: the great fortress of Nové Zámky, down on the plain, had fallen to the Turks the year before, and raiding columns rode up the river valleys from it. This is one of the rarer cases where 'destroyed by the Turks' is what the records actually say — for many Slovak towns and castles the same phrase is local legend, and the real cause was a fire, or an imperial army demolishing a rebel stronghold. Here it is attested, and the town took generations to recover.V roku 1664 zničili Novú Baňu osmanské vojská.
The seventeenth century almost finished Nová Baňa off. Hungarian nobles rose against the Habsburgs again and again, armies of both sides lived off this countryside, and plague came through more than once; between them they nearly emptied the town. Mining went on, but on a small scale and always short of money and hands. A place that had been one of seven privileged royal towns was now a poor one with an expensive problem underground.Sedemnáste storočie Novú Baňu takmer položilo. Uhorská šľachta sa znovu a znovu búrila proti Habsburgovcom, vojská oboch strán žili z tunajšieho vidieka a viackrát prešiel mor; dovedna mesto takmer vyľudnili. Ťažba pokračovala, ale v malom a stále bez peňazí a bez ľudí. Z jedného zo siedmich výsadných kráľovských miest bolo chudobné mestečko s drahým problémom pod zemou.
The problem was water: the shafts stood flooded deeper than horse-driven pumps could lift. In 1722 an atmospheric steam engine of the type Thomas Newcomen had built in England was erected over a shaft above the town, under the English engineer Isaac Potter, to pump them out. It worked by condensing steam inside a cylinder so that ordinary air pressure pushed the piston down — clumsy, hungry for fuel, and revolutionary. It was the first working steam engine anywhere on the European mainland: the machine that would drive the industrial revolution arrived in a Slovak mining town decades before the revolution did.Problémom bola voda: šachty stáli zatopené hlbšie, než ju vládali vytiahnuť konské čerpadlá. V roku 1722 postavili nad jednou zo šácht nad mestom atmosférický parný stroj typu, aký v Anglicku staval Thomas Newcomen; práce viedol anglický inžinier Izák Potter a stroj mal bane odvodniť.
In 1887 the mines of Nová Baňa were closed as unprofitable, five and a half centuries after the first miners came over the hills. Gold was still in the rock, but not enough of it to pay wages, pumps and pit timber at nineteenth-century prices, when metal could be bought on a world market. Mining towns that lose their mines usually lose their people too — and these were the decades when Slovaks were leaving for America in their hundreds of thousands. What was left here was the forest, the orchards on the warm slopes, and the memory.V roku 1887 zatvorili novobanské bane ako nerentabilné, päť a pol storočia po tom, čo sem cez kopce prišli prví baníci.
Modern industry reached the town in 1907, when a glassworks was built in Nová Baňa itself — the old forest trade of Stará Huta brought down into a factory with a chimney and a shift system. For a town that had just lost its mines this mattered: it was work that did not depend on ore. Industry rather than mining is what Nová Baňa has lived on ever since.Moderný priemysel prišiel do mesta v roku 1907, keď priamo v Novej Bani postavili sklársky závod — staré lesné remeslo zo Starej Huty zišlo dolu do fabriky s komínom a so zmenami.
Austria-Hungary collapsed in the autumn of 1918 and this valley became part of Czechoslovakia. No local drama of that autumn is recorded here; the change arrived as new officials, new stamps, and Slovak instead of Hungarian in the school and the town office. Economically it was harder than it sounds. The old Hungarian market was now behind a border, and the new republic's industry was concentrated in Bohemia and Moravia, a long way from a small town on the Hron. Hospodársky to bolo ťažšie, než to znie.
When the Slovak National Uprising began on 29 August 1944, a partisan unit was formed in the town itself — the Nová Baňa detachment. The Uprising's capital, Banská Bystrica, fell to the German army on 27 October, and the fighters who were left took to the hills, including the wooded ridges of the Štiavnica range and the Vtáčnik above this stretch of the river. The German answer was reprisal against the villages that fed them: up the Kľak valley beyond Žarnovica, two whole villages were burned and about 148 people killed on 21 January 1945. The front reached the Hron valley in the spring of 1945.Keď sa 29. augusta 1944 začalo Slovenské národné povstanie, sformoval sa priamo v meste partizánsky Novobanský oddiel. Povstalecké hlavné mesto Banská Bystrica padlo Nemcom 27. októbra a tí, čo zostali v zbrani, odišli do hôr — aj do zalesnených chrbtov Štiavnických vrchov a Vtáčnika nad týmto úsekom rieky.
Under communism the whole middle Hron was reorganised around heavy industry, above all the aluminium works built at Žiar nad Hronom in the 1950s, a quarter of an hour upstream. Nová Baňa became in part a commuter town: people worked shifts elsewhere and came home to sleep. The Tajch, the reservoir the old mining engineers had built in the woods to store water power for the mines, turned into the town's swimming lake — industrial equipment repurposed as a summer place, which has happened to a good many things in this region. The mining past moved into the museum in the old town hall on the square.
In the independent Slovak Republic the town's largest employer is a mineral-wool plant on the industrial ground at the edge of town, with woodworking and engineering firms around it and a steady flow of commuters to Žiar nad Hronom. The R1 expressway down the valley put Nitra and Banská Bystrica within an hour's drive. What the town offers a visitor is its own history: the Pohronie Museum in the old town hall, the Baroque calvary on the hill, the Tajch in the woods — and the story of Potter's engine, the one thing that happened here that changed the world.V samostatnej Slovenskej republike je najväčším zamestnávateľom mesta závod na minerálnu vlnu na priemyselnej ploche na okraji mesta, okolo neho drevárske a strojárske firmy a stály prúd ľudí dochádzajúcich do Žiaru nad Hronom.
