1664 The Turks destroy the townTurci zničili mesto

In 1664 Ottoman troops destroyed Nová Baňa. The frontier had crept close: the great fortress of Nové Zámky, down on the plain, had fallen to the Turks the year before, and raiding columns rode up the river valleys from it. This is one of the rarer cases where 'destroyed by the Turks' is what the records actually say — for many Slovak towns and castles the same phrase is local legend, and the real cause was a fire, or an imperial army demolishing a rebel stronghold. Here it is attested, and the town took generations to recover.V roku 1664 zničili Novú Baňu osmanské vojská. Hranica sa dovtedy priblížila: veľká pevnosť Nové Zámky dolu na rovine padla Turkom rok predtým a odtiaľ vyrážali nájazdné kolóny hore riečnymi dolinami. Toto je jeden z tých zriedkavejších prípadov, keď „zničili to Turci“ hovoria aj pramene — pri mnohých slovenských mestách a hradoch je tá istá veta len miestnou povesťou a skutočnou príčinou bol požiar alebo cisárske vojsko, ktoré zbúralo povstalecké sídlo. Tu je to doložené a mesto sa spamätávalo celé generácie.
