With mining faltering, the other resource here was the forest, and in 1630 one of the oldest glassworks in the Kingdom of Hungary was set up at Stará Huta just outside the town. A glassworks needs three things this valley had in quantity: sand, endless firewood, and potash burned from beech ash. It also eats forest at a frightening rate, which is why such works moved every few decades. V roku 1630 vznikla v Starej Hute kúsok za mestom jedna z najstarších sklární v Uhorsku. Sklárňa potrebuje tri veci, ktorých tu bolo dosť: piesok, nekonečné palivové drevo a potaš vypálený z bukového popola. Zároveň spotrebúva les desivým tempom, a preto sa takéto huty každých pár desaťročí sťahovali. Práve sklo, nie zlato, sa tu bude vyrábať ešte o tristo rokov.
