Svätý Anton is not a castle and was never meant to defend anything. It is a manor house — a kaštieľ — built on the flat below Sitno at the moment its owners stopped needing a rock to be safe on, and that change is the whole point of it. Two families run through the story: the Kohárys, who rose on the Ottoman frontier, and the Coburgs, who married into the inheritance and ended up on half the thrones of Europe.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
The village first appears in writing in 1266, spelled Scentantollo, and again in 1276 as Sanctus Antonius — Latin for Saint Anthony, which is where the name comes from and where it has stayed for seven and a half centuries. Remember what a first written mention actually is: a fact about a surviving document, not about when people arrived. Somebody had a reason to write this place down by 1266, and the parchment happened to survive; the farms were older than the paperwork. This was the generation after the Mongol invasion of 1241, when the kingdom was being resettled and stone castles were going up on every defensible hill in the region — including the flat-topped hill of Sitno above the village, where only scraps of a small castle remain today.
In 1472 the village belonged to the estate of Čabraď, a castle on the Krupina plateau to the south; when that estate was divided in the sixteenth century, Svätý Anton passed to the estate of the castle on Sitno, directly above it. This is the ordinary condition of a Slovak village for most of its history: it did not govern itself, it belonged to a castle, and which castle it belonged to could change without anyone here being asked. The sixteenth century made the arrangement matter. After 1526 the Ottomans held the middle of the kingdom, their raiding parties reached into these hills, and the practical point of belonging to a castle was that there was somewhere to run to when the alarm went up.V roku 1472 patrila obec panstvu hradu Čabraď na Krupinskej planine na juhu; keď sa toto panstvo v šestnástom storočí rozdelilo, Svätý Anton pripadol panstvu hradu na Sitne priamo nad ním.
In 1622 Emperor Ferdinand II granted Čabraď to Baron Peter Koháry as a reward for service against the Ottomans, and the Koháry family held this country for the rest of its working life. The great figure of the family was Štefan Koháry, a Habsburg general and a poet, who died at Čabraď in 1731; in 1720 he had also bought the Muráň estate in Gemer from the royal chamber, so the same man's name sits on both ends of what is now this region. Then his heirs did something that tells you the wars were finally over: they moved out of the fortress and downhill, onto the flat, to build a house with large windows in it. You cannot put a window like that in a wall that has to stop a cannonball.V roku 1622 daroval cisár Ferdinand II.
The manor went up on the site of an older house from 1744 and was finished around 1750: a long, low, symmetrical late-baroque front with a tower over the entrance, a courtyard behind and outbuildings to the sides. Its fame rests on a conceit that was fashionable at the time — the building can be read as a calendar: four entrances for the seasons, seven arcades for the days of the week, twelve chimneys for the months, fifty-two rooms for the weeks and three hundred and sixty-five windows for the days. Whether every number still counts out exactly after three centuries of alterations is doubtful, and the museum says so itself; the idea, though, was real. It was also the moment when the mining country over the hill was at its most confident: a mining school opened in Banská Štiavnica in 1735 and was raised into an academy for the whole monarchy in the 1760s. This house is what that confidence looked like from the landowning side of it.Kaštieľ začali stavať na mieste staršieho domu v roku 1744 a dokončili ho okolo roku 1750: dlhé, nízke, súmerné neskorobarokové priečelie s vežou nad vstupom, za ním nádvorie a po stranách hospodárske budovy.
In 1812 Count František Jozef Koháry settled the awkward question of the family's old fortress by having Čabraď burned down; nobody ever rebuilt it, and the family's centre of gravity was now firmly down here. He had no son. His daughter and heiress, Mária Antónia Koháryová, had married a prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and when her father died in 1826 the whole inheritance — Svätý Anton, Muráň and the rest — passed into that house. Then the revolution of 1848 abolished serfdom, and the estate stopped being a lordship over people and became simply a very large amount of land and forest. The house built to run a domain turned into a house you came to and lived in.V roku 1812 vyriešil gróf František Jozef Koháry nepríjemnú otázku starej rodovej pevnosti tak, že dal Čabraď vypáliť; nikto ju už neobnovil a ťažisko rodu bolo odteraz jednoznačne tu dolu. Syna nemal. Potom revolúcia roku 1848 zrušila poddanstvo a z panstva prestala byť vláda nad ľuďmi; ostala z neho jednoducho veľmi veľká výmera polí a lesov.
The Coburgs were, in the phrase of the time, the stud farm of Europe: within two generations the family sat on or beside the thrones of Belgium, Portugal, Britain and Bulgaria. The one who matters here is Ferdinand, grandson of the Koháry heiress, born in Vienna in 1861. Bulgaria elected him its prince in 1887; in 1908 he declared its independence and took the title tsar; and after Bulgaria's defeat in the First World War he abdicated on 3 October 1918. The empire he had grown up in disappeared that same autumn, and Svätý Anton woke up in a new country, Czechoslovakia. He went on coming back to hunt in these forests, on and off, until 1944 — a deposed monarch, in a republic, on the estate his grandmother had brought into the family.
In 1939 Slovakia became a separate state allied to Nazi Germany. The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 and these hills lay inside insurgent territory. On 9 October 1944 units of the German battle group Schill occupied Banská Štiavnica, and a special assault detachment went to the manor and took the former tsar Ferdinand and his suite away with them; he never came back, and died in Coburg in Germany in 1948. Two days later, on 11 October, the same battle group took the village of Svätý Anton against insurgent resistance. Soviet troops of the 53rd Army reached Banská Štiavnica on 7 March 1945.V roku 1939 vznikol samostatný slovenský štát spojený s nacistickým Nemeckom. Sovietske vojská 53. armády prišli do Banskej Štiavnice 7. marca 1945.
The Coburg estates in Slovakia were confiscated in 1945 and a hundred and twenty years of the family's connection with this place ended. The house could have been emptied and left to rot, which is what happened to a great many manor houses in these years; instead it was given a job, and the job was the one it already had. From 1962 it housed the museum of forestry, timber and hunting — and a building with a use gets its roof repaired, which is why the interiors are still here. The village fared less well under a state that disliked saints: from 1960 it was officially called simply Antol, with the Svätý — the Saint — dropped from the name.
In 1996 the villagers petitioned to have the old name restored, and the place is Svätý Anton again — one of the small, cheap, entirely voluntary acts by which a country decides what it wants to be called. The manor is today Slovakia's museum of hunting and forestry: the historic Koháry and Coburg interiors on the guided route, then trophies, historic firearms and the working history of Slovak forestry, with an English-style park outside and the St Hubert's Days festival in the grounds. One last turn, and a recent one: in 2024 Ferdinand's remains were taken from the family crypt in Coburg back to Bulgaria and reburied at Vrana outside Sofia. Even the dead of this house are still moving between countries.V roku 1996 si obyvatelia petíciou vypýtali staré meno späť a obec sa opäť volá Svätý Anton — jeden z tých malých, lacných a celkom dobrovoľných krokov, ktorými sa krajina rozhoduje, ako sa chce volať. A ešte jeden, celkom čerstvý obrat: v roku 2024 previezli Ferdinandove pozostatky z rodinnej krypty v Coburgu späť do Bulharska a pochovali ich vo Vrane pri Sofii.
