The village first appears in writing in 1266, spelled Scentantollo, and again in 1276 as Sanctus Antonius — Latin for Saint Anthony, which is where the name comes from and where it has stayed for seven and a half centuries. Remember what a first written mention actually is: a fact about a surviving document, not about when people arrived. Somebody had a reason to write this place down by 1266, and the parchment happened to survive; the farms were older than the paperwork.
