History of Modrý Kameň CastleDejiny — Hrad Modrý Kameň

Modrý Kameň — "blue stone" — is a small castle that had one very bad summer. Ancestors of the Balassa family built it on a rock above the road through Novohrad; an Ottoman army took it in 1575 and the Ottoman garrison blew it up when they were driven out in 1593. The baroque house standing in its lower ward was built two centuries later by the same family, and today it holds the only museum of puppetry and toys in Slovakia.

The Mongol invasion of 1241 wrecked the Kingdom of Hungary's wooden forts and taught its king one lesson: build in stone, and build high. In the second half of the thirteenth century the ancestors of the family later known as the Balassa put a castle on this rocky outcrop — a compact upper castle on the crown of the hill with a walled ward beneath it, enough to hold a garrison and take a toll from the road below. The place is first named in writing in 1290, spelled Keykkw, and in that same year its holder, Kazimír of the Hont-Pázmány clan, was forced to surrender it. The name means "blue stone", and it comes from the rock the castle stands on.Vpád Mongolov roku 1241 zničil drevené hradiská Uhorska a kráľa naučil jedno: stavať z kameňa a vysoko.

  2. early 14th centuryzačiatok 14. storočia Matúš Čák takes it, like everything elseMatúš Čák si ho vezme ako všetko ostatné

For the first two decades of the fourteenth century the north of the kingdom effectively had no king. Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the most powerful of the Hungarian oligarchs, ran a private state out of his castles, and Modrý Kameň was one of the many he took; after him it was held by Peter Zólyomi. Only when Charles Robert of Anjou broke the oligarchs did castles like this go back to being ordinary noble seats. From the fourteenth century on Modrý Kameň belonged to the Balassa, and their name runs through the history of this whole border country — including, later, the fortified monastery at Bzovík and half the castles of Novohrad.

After the Ottomans destroyed the Hungarian army at Mohács in 1526 and took Buda in 1541, the war moved steadily north. Fiľakovo, thirty kilometres east of here, fell in 1554 and became the seat of an Ottoman sanjak — a frontier district whose garrison raided north every season. The small Balassa strongholds behind it, Modrý Kameň among them, were suddenly front-line posts: undermanned, unpaid for months at a time, and a long way from any help. They lived like that for twenty years, and everyone involved knew it could not last.

  4. 1554 – 15941554 – 1594 The poet of the frontierBásnik pohraničia

The family that was about to lose this castle had already given the frontier its poet. Bálint Balassi was born in 1554 at Zvolen castle, into the same Balassa line, and wrote the first great lyric poetry in the Hungarian language — soldiers' songs, love songs and hymns — in the camps and garrisons of exactly this border war. He spent his life in the saddle between two empires, quarrelled with almost everybody, and died in 1594 of wounds taken at the siege of Esztergom, in the same long war that had cost his family its castles. The museum in the mansion here keeps a room about him.

  5. 17 July 157517. júla 1575 Three days, and the castle was OttomanTri dni a hrad bol osmanský

In the summer of 1575 a campaign launched out of Buda swept up the whole chain of Novohrad hill castles — Divín, Šomoška and Modrý Kameň — in a matter of weeks. Modrý Kameň held out for three days. On 17 July 1575 its commander, Imrich Pribek, got out and made for Divín, and the castle became an Ottoman garrison post. The Ottomans held it for the best part of twenty years, called it Ikipolanka, and added a second line of fortification of their own. For those two decades, the road below this hill was an Ottoman road.V lete 1575 zmietla výprava vypravená z Budína celú reťaz novohradských hradov — Divín, Šomošku aj Modrý Kameň — za niekoľko týždňov. Osmani ho držali takmer dvadsať rokov, volali ho Ikipolanka a pristavali si vlastné druhé opevnenie. Tie dve desaťročia bola cesta pod týmto kopcom osmanskou cestou.

  6. 15 December 159315. decembra 1593 Retaken, and blown up on the way outDobytý späť a pri odchode vyhodený do vzduchu

The long war that began in 1593 pushed the frontier back south again. On 15 December 1593 an imperial army under Krištof Tiefenbach retook Modrý Kameň — and this is one of the cases where "destroyed by the Turks" is actually true: the Ottoman garrison blew the castle up as they abandoned it, and what the imperial troops got back was a wreck. It matters that this one is documented, because the same phrase is repeated about dozens of Slovak castles where the real damage was done by fire, by neglect, or by a Habsburg order to demolish.

  7. 1603–1612 · after 16631603 – 1612 · po roku 1663 Rebuilt once, then given upRaz obnovený, potom vzdaný

Žigmund Balassa rebuilt the castle between about 1603 and 1612, and the village below it was resettled at the same time. It did not hold. The seventeenth century put this country through a run of anti-Habsburg risings and one more Ottoman advance — Nové Zámky fell in 1663 and the frontier came north again — and by the end of it the upper castle was a shell nobody thought worth repairing. A hilltop fortress only makes sense while there is something to defend from it. When the wars finally ended, there was not.Žigmund Balaša dal hrad okolo rokov 1603 – 1612 znova postaviť a v tom istom čase sa nanovo zaľudnila aj dedina pod ním. Nevydržalo to.

  8. 1730 · chapel 17591730 · kaplnka 1759 A house built out of a fortressDom postavený z pevnosti

In 1730 Gabriel Balassa built a baroque residence across the lower ward: a two-storey house on a U-shaped plan, raised on the fortress footings and partly out of the fortress's own stone. Its chapel, dedicated to St Anne, was finished in 1759 — the slender turret you can see from the park belongs to it. The result is worth looking at properly, because it is unusual: a comfortable country house sitting inside the broken shell of a frontier castle, built by the very family that had lost the castle, at the moment they stopped expecting to be attacked.Roku 1730 dal Gabriel Balaša postaviť naprieč dolným nádvorím barokový kaštieľ: dvojpodlažnú stavbu na pôdoryse do U, položenú na základoch pevnosti a sčasti postavenú z jej vlastného kameňa. Kaplnku zasvätenú svätej Anne dokončili roku 1759 — patrí jej štíhla vežička, ktorú vidno z parku. Výsledok stojí za dlhší pohľad, lebo je nezvyčajný: pohodlné vidiecke sídlo vo vnútri rozbitej škrupiny pohraničnej pevnosti, postavené presne tým rodom, ktorý o hrad prišiel — vo chvíli, keď prestal čakať útok.

  9. 1918 · 19231918 · 1923 From a family to a stateOd rodu k štátu

The Balassa line died out in 1899, after more than five hundred years on this hill, and the estate passed to the Almássy family. Then the map changed: Austria-Hungary broke apart in 1918 and Modrý Kameň became part of Czechoslovakia. In 1923 the castle and the estate around it were sold to the Czechoslovak state, as part of the land reform that broke up the great noble holdings across the new republic. That sale is ultimately why anyone can walk in today — from then on the place belonged to the public rather than to a family.

  10. 19441944 The uprising, from the town belowPovstanie z mesta pod hradom

The Slovak State that existed from 1939 to 1945 was Nazi Germany's ally. On 29 August 1944 the Slovak National Uprising broke out, partisan groups operated in the hills around Modrý Kameň, and the town below the castle became the seat of the district's revolutionary national committee — the uprising's own local government, set up in defiance of the Bratislava regime. German units put the uprising down in the autumn, and the front reached this country over the following winter. Dvadsiateho deviateho augusta 1944 vypuklo Slovenské národné povstanie, v okolitých vrchoch pôsobili partizánske skupiny a mesto pod hradom sa stalo sídlom okresného revolučného národného výboru — vlastnej povstaleckej samosprávy postavenej proti bratislavskému režimu. Nemecké jednotky povstanie na jeseň potlačili a cez nasledujúcu zimu dorazil do kraja front.

  11. since the 1990sod 90. rokov 20. storočia Puppets in a frontier castleBábky v pohraničnom hrade

The mansion now holds the Slovak National Museum's Museum of Puppetry Cultures and Toys, the only collection of its kind in the country: marionettes, rod and glove puppets, whole travelling stages, and cabinets of historic toys. There is a room on the poet Bálint Balassi, an ethnographic display of the region, and — unexpectedly — a history of dentistry. Behind and above the house the walls of the medieval castle can be walked freely, which is the best way to understand what happened here: a garrison captured, occupied and abandoned inside a single lifetime, with a comfortable house built over its ruins two hundred years later.V kaštieli dnes sídli Múzeum bábkarských kultúr a hračiek, pracovisko Slovenského národného múzea a jediná zbierka svojho druhu v krajine: marionety, javajky a maňušky, celé kočovné divadlá a vitríny historických hračiek.
