Up Through the ParkHore cez park
Modrý Kameň is a very small town, and the castle hill rises straight out of it — you park below and walk up through the park that wraps the slope, old trees and grass and, in spring, the smell of lime blossom. The mansion appears all at once at the top: a long symmetrical baroque front, pale-walled, with a little turret over the chapel. It reads as a country house, and that is exactly what it was meant to be.Modrý Kameň je veľmi malé mestečko a hradný kopec sa dvíha priamo z neho — zaparkujete dole a vyjdete hore parkom, ktorý obopína svah: staré stromy, tráva a na jar vôňa lipových kvetov. Kaštieľ sa objaví naraz, celý: dlhé súmerné barokové priečelie so svetlými múrmi a s vežičkou nad kaplnkou. Pôsobí ako vidiecke sídlo — a presne tým mal byť.
Walk round the back and the older castle comes out from behind the house: broken curtain wall, the stump of a tower, the shape of the medieval ward pressed into the hilltop. It is not a large ruin and it does not take long, but standing between the two — the fortress behind you and the drawing-room front in front of you — is the clearest way anyone has ever explained what happened on this frontier. From the terrace the country opens south in long soft ridges toward the Hungarian border.Obíďte dom zozadu a spoza neho vystúpi starší hrad: prelomený obvodový múr, pahýľ veže, obrys stredovekého nádvoria vtlačený do temena kopca. Nie je to veľká zrúcanina a dlho vám neubudne, ale stáť medzi tými dvoma vecami — pevnosťou za chrbtom a salónnym priečelím pred sebou — je to najzrozumiteľnejšie vysvetlenie toho, čo sa na tejto hranici odohralo. Z terasy sa kraj otvára na juh do dlhých mäkkých hrebeňov smerom k maďarskej hranici.
