History of DivínDejiny — Divín

Divín is a ruin with a very clear lesson in it. The Ottomans took this castle and held it for eighteen years, and it survived them. What finally destroyed it was its own emperor, who had it pulled down so that a robber baron could never use it again.Divín je zrúcanina s veľmi jasným ponaučením. Osmani tento hrad dobyli a osemnásť rokov ho držali — a hrad ich prežil. Zničil ho až vlastný cisár, ktorý ho dal rozobrať, aby ho už nikdy nemohol použiť lúpežný rytier.

  1. turn of the 13th and 14th centuriesprelom 13. a 14. storočia A castle to watch the roadHrad, ktorý stráži cestu

Divín was built at the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, in the wave of stone fortification that followed the Mongol invasion of 1241, on a ridge above the road that runs from the Novohrad basin up toward the mining country. It was a working castle rather than a grand one: an upper ward on the rock, an outer enclosure below it, and walls that were thickened again every time artillery got better.

  2. 13291329 First named in a documentPrvý raz menovaný v listine

The castle appears in writing in 1329, as Dyun. It was held by the Losonci family, who took their name from Losonc — today's Lučenec — and its job was the road: whoever held Divín controlled the traffic between the southern plain and the hills. That is the entire reason it stands where it stands.V listinách sa hrad objavuje roku 1329 ako Dyun. Držali ho Lošonciovci, ktorí sa volali podľa Lošonca — dnešného Lučenca — a jeho úlohou bola cesta: kto mal Divín, kontroloval dopravu medzi južnou rovinou a kopcami. To je celý dôvod, prečo stojí práve tam, kde stojí.

  3. 14691469 Confiscated, granted, then simply seizedSkonfiškovaný, darovaný, potom jednoducho obsadený

In 1469 King Matthias Corvinus took the castle from the Losonci, who had backed the wrong side in the plots against him, and granted it to Michal Országh. It passed on again to the Nádasdy family, and was then simply seized by force by Žigmund Balaša. With that seizure the Balassa family arrive at Divín, and they stay for two hundred years — the family whose good name and bad name the castle still carries.Roku 1469 odobral kráľ Matej Korvín hrad Lošonciovcom, ktorí sa v sprisahaniach proti nemu postavili na nesprávnu stranu, a daroval ho Michalovi Orságovi. Hrad prešiel ďalej na Nádašdyovcov a napokon ho násilím jednoducho obsadil Žigmund Balaša. Týmto zásahom prichádzajú na Divín Balašovci a zostanú dvesto rokov — rod, ktorého dobré aj zlé meno hrad nesie dodnes.

  4. 1559–15931559 – 1593 Eighteen years under an Ottoman garrisonOsemnásť rokov s osmanskou posádkou

The Balassas modernised the castle in 1559 with bastions and corner towers, and it was not enough. With Fiľakovo in Ottoman hands since 1554, the small castles behind it were living on borrowed time: an Ottoman army took Divín in 1575 after a siege and held it for eighteen years. Royal forces recovered it in 1593, in the same campaign that retook Fiľakovo. Slovak accounts credit the recapture to Bálint Balassi — a soldier of this family, and the greatest Hungarian poet of his century, killed the following year at the siege of Esztergom.Balašovci hrad roku 1559 zmodernizovali baštami a nárožnými vežami — a nestačilo to.

  5. 1666–16701666 – 1670 The robber baronLúpežný rytier

The lord of Divín in these years was Imrich Balaša, remembered across Novohrad as a lúpežný rytier, a robber knight: a nobleman who used a frontier castle and a private garrison to prey on his neighbours — seized cattle, seized carts, seized people. In 1666 the palatine's troops took the castle and put him in prison. He was released in June 1667 and, with imperial soldiers now holding the castle above the village, built himself a fortified Renaissance manor house at the foot of the hill in 1670. Then he got the upper castle back by a trick.Pánom Divína bol v týchto rokoch Imrich Balaša, ktorého si Novohrad pamätá ako lúpežného rytiera: šľachtica, čo pohraničný hrad a vlastnú posádku využíval na plienenie susedov — zhabaný dobytok, zhabané vozy, zajatí ľudia. Roku 1666 hrad obsadilo palatínovo vojsko a jeho samého uväznili. V júni 1667 ho prepustili, a keďže hrad nad dedinou držali cisárski vojaci, postavil si roku 1670 na úpätí kopca opevnený renesančný kaštieľ. Potom horný hrad ľsťou získal späť.

  6. 1679, or 1683 by the local account1679, podľa miestneho podania 1683 Pulled down by its own emperorZrúcaný vlastným cisárom

The reckoning came when imperial commanders — Karl von Strassoldo and Jakob von Leslie are the names given — besieged Divín, took it, and then did what armies rarely bother to do after a victory: they demolished it, so that this hilltop could never again hold a garrison answerable to nobody. Hungarian sources date the demolition to 1679; the account told locally puts it in 1683. The castle was never rebuilt. Look at the upper ward and you can see the difference between wall that fell and wall that was pushed over — the Ottomans only occupied Divín, and it took its own emperor to destroy it.Účtovanie prišlo, keď cisárski velitelia — uvádzajú sa mená Karl von Strassoldo a Jakob von Leslie — Divín obliehali, dobyli a potom urobili to, čo si vojská po víťazstve zvyčajne nedávajú za námahu: dali ho zbúrať, aby tento kopec už nikdy nedržal posádku, ktorá sa nikomu nezodpovedá. Maďarské pramene kladú zborenie do roku 1679, miestne podanie do roku 1683. Hrad už nikto neobnovil. Na hornom nádvorí vidno rozdiel medzi múrom, ktorý spadol, a múrom, ktorý niekto zvalil — Osmani Divín iba obsadili, zničiť ho musel až vlastný cisár.

  7. from 1686od roku 1686 Life moves downhillŽivot sa sťahuje dolu

Nobody built on the ridge again. The family lived in the manor house on the flat, and from 1686 the Zichy family held the patronage rights here, keeping them until 1945 — which is why the manor is usually called the Zichy kaštieľ. The ruin above was left to the forest and became a quarry for anyone who needed dressed stone. One detail is worth keeping straight: the manor was built in 1670, while the castle was still standing. The move downhill began before the demolition, not after it.Na hrebeni už nik nestaval.

  8. August 1944 – 1945august 1944 – 1945 The uprising in the mountains, and the frontPovstanie v horách a front

The Slovak National Uprising broke out in August 1944 and declared itself at Banská Bystrica, over the hills to the north-west; Divín spent that autumn in a Slovakia at war with the German army that came to crush it, with the fighting in the mountains rather than in the villages of the basin. The front reached Novohrad in the winter of 1944–45. With it the Vienna Award ended: in 1945 the border of 1938 was cancelled and the towns to the south returned to Czechoslovakia. The Zichy family's long connection with the village ended in the same year. Front dorazil do Novohradu v zime 1944 – 1945.

  9. 1945 – the 1970s1945 – sedemdesiate roky Magnesite, the collective farm and the reservoirMagnezit, družstvo a nádrž

After the war the manor house was taken over by the state and used by the collective farm. Magnesite had been mined in this area since the early twentieth century, and in the early 1970s the valley below the castle was dammed to make the Ružiná reservoir, which was adopted almost at once as the summer beach of the whole district. The ruin on the ridge, meanwhile, went on quietly falling down.

  10. since the 1990sod deväťdesiatych rokov Consolidation, and a museum in the manorKonzervovanie a múzeum v kaštieli

Divín is freely accessible, and in recent years it has had steady conservation attention: capped wall-heads, repointed faces, cleared vegetation, and often work going on in summer. The manor house down in the village now holds a museum. See both in one visit and the story is in front of you — the fortress that was deliberately unmade, and the comfortable house its owners lived in instead. Pozrite si v jednej návšteve oboje a príbeh máte pred sebou — pevnosť, ktorú niekto zámerne rozobral, a pohodlný dom, v ktorom jej majitelia namiesto nej bývali.
