On 24 August 1944, five days before the Slovak National Uprising was declared, a partisan unit raided the sawmill at Turany, which was being worked for a German firm, and overpowered the Gestapo men found there. That autumn the Turiec was insurgent country, and when German units forced the basin the fighting came up this stretch of the Váh; Sklabiňa castle, the old county seat, was burnt out in the reprisals and has been a ruin ever since. Sixteen men of Turany were killed in the fighting and eight civilians died as the front passed over the town. Turany was liberated on 9 April 1945 — by soldiers of the First Czechoslovak Brigade, according to the town's own record.24. augusta 1944, päť dní pred vyhlásením Slovenského národného povstania, prepadla partizánska jednotka pílu v Turanoch, ktorú prevádzkovala nemecká firma, a zneškodnila gestapákov, ktorí tam boli. Na jeseň sa Turiec stal povstaleckým územím, a keď nemecké jednotky vtrhli do kotliny, boje prišli aj hore týmto úsekom Váhu; hrad Sklabiňa, staré sídlo stolice, pri represáliách vyhorel a odvtedy je zrúcaninou.
