Turany first appears in writing in the fourteenth century, though the sources disagree about which year: the town's own record points to a charter of 1 July 1319, while standard reference works give 1361, when the place is written Turan. An old parish chronicle claims a small church already stood here around 1300. What is certain is that the basin was reorganised in 1339, when Turiec was cut out of Zvolen county and made a county of its own, with its seat at the castle of Sklabiňa in the hills to the north-east — and Turany belonged to the Sklabiňa estate.Prvá písomná zmienka o Turanoch pochádza zo 14. storočia, no pramene sa na roku nezhodujú: samotné mesto sa hlási k listine z 1. júla 1319, kým príručky uvádzajú rok 1361, keď sa obec píše ako Turan. Stará farská kronika spomína kostolík už okolo roku 1300. Isté je, že kotlinu v roku 1339 preusporiadali: Turiec sa oddelil od Zvolenskej stolice a stal sa samostatnou stolicou so sídlom na hrade Sklabiňa v kopcoch na severovýchode — a Turany patrili k sklabinskému panstvu.
