History of TuranyDejiny — Turany

Turany stands where the Váh comes into the Turiec basin under the rock ridge of the Malá Fatra, and its whole history is made of wood: forests running down to the river, rafts floated away downstream, then sawmills, then a state timber works. It held royal market privileges for five hundred years, lost that standing when Austria-Hungary fell, and did not get it back until 2016.Turany ležia tam, kde Váh vstupuje do Turčianskej kotliny pod skalnatým hrebeňom Malej Fatry, a celé ich dejiny sú z dreva: lesy siahajúce až k rieke, plte spúšťané po prúde, potom píly a napokon štátny drevársky podnik.

  1. 1319 or 1361 · 13391319 alebo 1361 · 1339 A village in a brand-new countyDedina v celkom novej stolici

Turany first appears in writing in the fourteenth century, though the sources disagree about which year: the town's own record points to a charter of 1 July 1319, while standard reference works give 1361, when the place is written Turan. An old parish chronicle claims a small church already stood here around 1300. What is certain is that the basin was reorganised in 1339, when Turiec was cut out of Zvolen county and made a county of its own, with its seat at the castle of Sklabiňa in the hills to the north-east — and Turany belonged to the Sklabiňa estate.

  2. 1397 · 1405 · 14611397 · 1405 · 1461 Privileges from three kingsVýsady od troch kráľov

In 1397 King Sigismund of Luxembourg granted Turany the rights of a market town under the law of Krupina, including the right to build a mill and to use the rivers and the forests freely — which, in a place ringed by trees, was the whole point. In 1405 he exempted the townspeople from taxes, though those rights were soon transferred to the local nobility instead of staying with the town. Matthias Corvinus confirmed the privileges again in 1461. A mestečko like this was not a free royal city: it still belonged to a lord, but it could hold markets, and that is what made it more than a village.V roku 1397 udelil kráľ Žigmund Luxemburský Turanom výsady mestečka podľa krupinského práva vrátane práva postaviť mlyn a slobodne užívať rieky aj lesy — čo v mieste obkolesenom stromami znamenalo takmer všetko.

  3. 1557 · 1563 · 15741557 · 1563 · 1574 Confirmed again, and countedZnova potvrdené a spočítané

The Ottoman armies that took the middle of the kingdom never came this far north, so the sixteenth century here is a story of paperwork rather than sieges. Ferdinand I confirmed the town's privileges in 1563 and added three annual fairs and a weekly market; Maximilian II confirmed them once more in 1574. A tax list of 1557 counts 48 households. The estate belonged to Sklabiňa, and from the sixteenth century into the nineteenth its lords were the Révay family, who held the county office along with the castle. Turiec had an unusual number of small noble families, and Turany lived among them. Ferdinand I. potvrdil výsady mestečka v roku 1563 a pridal tri výročné jarmoky a týždenný trh, Maximilián II. ich potvrdil znova v roku 1574. V Turci žilo neobyčajne veľa drobných šľachtických rodín a Turany boli uprostred nich.

  4. 1715 · 17841715 · 1784 Herdsmen, raftsmen and woodcuttersPastieri, pltníci a drevorubači

By 1715 the town had 108 households, and by 1784 it had 254 houses and 1,450 people — large for a Turiec settlement. They lived by herding, by working timber, and above all by rafting. A plť was a raft of logs lashed together and steered downriver by two or three men; from Turany they rode the Váh down towards the lowland, sold the cargo and the raft itself, and walked home. Rafting was skilled, badly paid and dangerous, and for two centuries it was how the forests of the Malá Fatra reached the rest of the kingdom.V roku 1715 malo mestečko 108 domácností a v roku 1784 už 254 domov a 1 450 obyvateľov — na turčiansku obec dosť.

On 8 December 1871 the first train ran through Turany: the Košice–Bohumín line, built across the north of the kingdom to carry Silesian coal to the east, had reached this stretch of the Váh. Overnight, timber could leave by the wagonload. On 2 June 1874 the town leased land on the right bank of the river to a firm from Budapest, which built a sawmill working by 1887 (another account dates the mill to 1889); a credit union followed in 1903. Cutting timber where it grew was now worth more than floating it away, and rafting on this stretch of the Váh went out of business.8. decembra 1871 prešiel Turanmi prvý vlak: Košicko-bohumínska železnica, stavaná naprieč severom Uhorska na dopravu sliezskeho uhlia na východ, dorazila aj na tento úsek Váhu.

In the summer of 1914 the sawmill burned to the ground. Within weeks Austria-Hungary was at war and the men of the town were in uniform. Turany came out of the war in a new country — Czechoslovakia, declared in October 1918 — and lost something in the change: the market-town status it had held since 1397 quietly lapsed, and for most of a century it would be an ordinary village on paper.V lete 1914 píla do tla zhorela. O pár týždňov bolo Rakúsko-Uhorsko vo vojne a muži z mestečka v uniformách.

  7. 19191919 The cellulose works come to townPrišla celulózka

In 1919 the cellulose factory at Ružomberok, one of the biggest industrial plants in the new republic, opened a woodworking works at Turany. That single decision fixed the town's trade for the rest of the century: not felling and floating, but processing — sawing, drying and cutting timber into finished goods, beside a railway that could take them anywhere. Czechoslovak Turany was a factory village in a basin of farms.V roku 1919 si ružomberská celulózka, jeden z najväčších priemyselných podnikov novej republiky, zriadila v Turanoch drevospracujúci závod.

On 24 August 1944, five days before the Slovak National Uprising was declared, a partisan unit raided the sawmill at Turany, which was being worked for a German firm, and overpowered the Gestapo men found there. That autumn the Turiec was insurgent country, and when German units forced the basin the fighting came up this stretch of the Váh; Sklabiňa castle, the old county seat, was burnt out in the reprisals and has been a ruin ever since. Sixteen men of Turany were killed in the fighting and eight civilians died as the front passed over the town. Turany was liberated on 9 April 1945 — by soldiers of the First Czechoslovak Brigade, according to the town's own record.24. augusta 1944, päť dní pred vyhlásením Slovenského národného povstania, prepadla partizánska jednotka pílu v Turanoch, ktorú prevádzkovala nemecká firma, a zneškodnila gestapákov, ktorí tam boli. Turany oslobodili 9. apríla 1945 — podľa vlastnej obecnej kroniky vojaci I. československej brigády.

  9. 1949 · 19631949 · 1963 Drevina, the state timber worksDrevina, štátny drevársky podnik

After the war the plants were nationalised and merged into a state enterprise, Drevina, which became the town's employer in a way the old sawmill never was: one works with hundreds of jobs and a whole village timed to its shifts. A fire in 1963 destroyed part of it, and the rebuilding that followed made it bigger. New blocks of flats and cultural buildings went up around it. Turany in these decades was what most of industrial Slovakia was — a single factory, and a town arranged around it.Po vojne závody znárodnili a spojili do štátneho podniku Drevina, ktorý sa stal zamestnávateľom obce tak, ako stará píla nikdy nebola: jeden podnik so stovkami pracovných miest a celá obec riadená jeho zmenami. Okolo pribudli nové bytovky a kultúrne budovy. Turany boli v tých desaťročiach tým, čím bola väčšina priemyselného Slovenska — jedna fabrika a obec zoradená okolo nej.

  10. 1 January 2016 · today1. január 2016 · dnes A town again, after most of a centuryZnova mestom, po takmer celom storočí

Wood is still the trade. The sawmills and joineries beside the railway work timber cut in the Malá Fatra and the Veľká Fatra, and whoever they do not employ, Martin and Vrútky do — people commute the short distance down the basin to the engineering plants, the railway works and the hospital. On 1 January 2016 Turany became a town again, recovering the standing it had held from 1397 until the end of Austria-Hungary. The motorway still stops short of it: the missing section of the D1 up the Váh is one of the longest-running gaps in the Slovak road network.Drevo je stále remeslom obce. Píly a stolárske dielne pri železnici spracúvajú drevo z Malej i Veľkej Fatry, a koho nezamestnajú ony, toho Martin a Vrútky — ľudia dochádzajú kúsok dole kotlinou do strojární, rušňových dielní a nemocnice.
