In 1677 Liptovský Mikuláš became the seat of the Liptov county — the stolica, later called župa, the unit of self-government that ran everything between the village and the king. That meant the county assembly met here, its officials worked here and, most importantly for what happens next, its court sat here. The county had no building of its own for a long time; at its congregation in 1712 it decided to buy the Hanzely curia on the square and spent 1713 rebuilding it for county business. A great deal of this town's recorded history is therefore courtroom history — not because anything unusual happened here, but because this is where the paperwork was kept.V roku 1677 sa Liptovský Mikuláš stal sídlom Liptovskej stolice — neskôr župy, teda samosprávnej jednotky, ktorá spravovala všetko medzi dedinou a kráľom. Znamenalo to, že sa tu schádzala stoličná kongregácia, pracovali tu jej úradníci a — čo je pre ďalší príbeh najdôležitejšie — zasadal tu jej súd. Stolica dlho nemala vlastnú budovu; na kongregácii v roku 1712 sa rozhodla kúpiť Hanzelyho kúriu na námestí a rok 1713 strávila jej prestavbou na stoličné potreby. Veľká časť zapísaných dejín tohto mesta je preto dejinami súdnej siene — nie preto, že by sa tu dialo čosi výnimočné, ale preto, že sa tu viedli spisy.
