In 1424 the town was granted the privilege of holding markets twice a year, and that single permission is what turned a church village into a trading place: two dates when everyone in the basin came here to buy and sell. Trade brought crafts, and crafts brought guilds. The middle of the same century brought fighting instead: the church of St Nicholas was damaged in the wars with the bratríci, the Brethren — companies of mostly Czech soldiers, many of them veterans of the Hussite wars, who were hired to hold northern Hungary and ended up running a good part of it for themselves. Liptov was well inside the ground they controlled.V roku 1424 získalo mesto výsadu konať jarmoky dvakrát do roka a práve toto jediné povolenie premenilo dedinu pri kostole na obchodné miesto: dva termíny, keď sa sem zišla celá kotlina kupovať a predávať. S obchodom prišli remeslá a s remeslami cechy. Polovica toho istého storočia však priniesla aj boje: kostol svätého Mikuláša poškodili vojny s bratríkmi — oddielmi prevažne českých vojakov, z ktorých mnohí boli vyslúžilci husitských vojen; najali ich strážiť severné Uhorsko a napokon si značnú jeho časť spravovali sami. Liptov ležal hlboko v území, ktoré ovládali.
