In 1914, the year the First World War began, Banič was granted an American patent for a parachute of his own design — a canopy strapped around the body and opened by the falling man himself. Slovak tradition makes him the inventor of the parachute; what is actually documented is the patent, and that he is said to have handed his rights to the American army. Both statements can be taught honestly: he really did patent a working idea, and he really was not the first person to make a parachute.
