Štefan Banič was born in Smolenice in 1870, into the decades when hundreds of thousands of people left Upper Hungary because there was not enough land to divide again. Like a great many of his neighbours he went to the United States and worked there as a miner — the American emigration is one of the largest single facts in the history of Slovak villages, and this one is no exception. In 1887 the first serious work began on the castle walls above the village, which meant paid jobs on the hill for the first time in a century. Ako mnohí susedia odišiel do Spojených štátov a pracoval tam ako baník — vysťahovalectvo do Ameriky je jedným z najväčších faktov v dejinách slovenských dedín a táto nie je výnimkou.
