The uprisingsPovstania
SmoleniceSmolenice
In 1663 the fortress of Nové Zámky fell to the Ottomans and their raiding parties spread across the whole west; villages at the foot of this range were in their path. Then came the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi, and on 26 December 1704 his kuruc army was beaten in a battle outside Trnava. Most accounts date the castle's wrecking to that war — not, as the story is usually told in villages like this one, to the Turks. For Smolenice it meant losing the household above it: the castle that had employed, taxed and protected the village stopped being a house and became a ruin.
