In 1388 King Sigismund granted the Smolenice estate to Stibor of Stiboricz, the greatest landowner of the western Váh country. The guard castle above the village was the last built of the chain that watched the Little Carpathian passes, and from then on the village's story and the castle's story are the same story. Whoever held the castle held the fields, the forest and the people — a village of this period is not a self-governing place but part of an estate.
