On 11 April 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal army at Muhi and then rode across the kingdom, and King Béla IV's answer was a programme of stone castles on high ground. Smolenice appears in writing for the first time about the middle of the thirteenth century, in the decades right after that shock. Notice what that does and does not tell you: it is a fact about a surviving document, not about when people arrived, and the hill above the village had already been settled for eighteen hundred years. The Mongols did not destroy anything here — but the fear of them is why the stone castle above the village exists at all.
