After the defeat at Mohács in 1526 the Ottomans took the middle of the kingdom, Trnava became the seat of the archbishop of Esztergom in 1543, and this village found itself in the rump of Hungary rather than on its frontier. The estate went to the Országh family and then, for nearly two hundred years, to the Erdődys. Smolenice worked what it had: the forest above for timber, charcoal and grazing, the slopes below for vines, the fields out on the plain for grain. The war was real but it was far away — what reached here were taxes, requisitions and the occasional raiding party.
