The same century brought two other things. Most of the town turned Lutheran, as most towns of western Hungary did. And refugee craftsmen arrived: the Habans, Anabaptists driven out of Moravia and the Alps because of their beliefs, who lived in communal farmsteads and were famous for their pottery — sixteenth-century Skalica took in a good many of them. Against all of it stood fire, the ordinary catastrophe of a town built of timber and thatch: four separate fires broke out in 1559 and another in 1592, and plague passed through in 1535 and again in 1581.To isté storočie prinieslo aj dve ďalšie veci. Väčšina mesta prestúpila na luteránsku vieru, tak ako väčšina miest západného Uhorska. A prišli remeselníci na úteku: habáni, novokrstenci vyhnaní pre vieru z Moravy a z Álp, ktorí žili v spoločných dvoroch a preslávili sa keramikou — Skalica ich v šestnástom storočí prijala neúrekom. Proti tomu všetkému stál oheň, obyčajná katastrofa mesta z dreva a slamy: v roku 1559 vypukli štyri samostatné požiare a ďalší v roku 1592, a v rokoch 1535 a 1581 prešiel mestom mor.
