The Hussite wars in Bohemia spilled over this border again and again, and Skalica sat directly in their path. Hussite garrisons took the town and held it — Slovak sources give 1432, English ones say it had become a Hussite strongpoint by 1428, and the two may simply describe a raid and then an occupation. What they agree on is the consequence: most of the townspeople, at that date largely German-speaking, fled or were driven out, and when the garrisons left Skalica stood half empty. It was resettled afterwards, and the Skalica that grew back was a Slovak-speaking town. A war fought over religion in another country quietly changed which language this one spoke.Husitské vojny v Čechách sa cez túto hranicu prelievali znova a znova a Skalica ležala presne v ich ceste. Husitské posádky mesto obsadili a držali — slovenské zdroje uvádzajú rok 1432, anglické hovoria, že husitskou oporou bola už roku 1428, a možno ide jednoducho o nájazd a potom o obsadenie. Zhodujú sa však na následku: väčšina mešťanov, vtedy prevažne nemecky hovoriacich, ušla alebo bola vyhnaná, a keď posádky odišli, Skalica stála spolovice prázdna. Znovu ju osídlili a Skalica, ktorá dorástla, už bola slovensky hovoriacim mestom. Vojna vedená pre vieru v inej krajine potichu zmenila, akou rečou sa tu hovorí.
