The fourteenth century is when Skalica becomes Skalica. The road from Hungary into Moravia — the Czech Road, reopened in 1336 after decades of fighting between the Hungarian king and the lords of the north-west — ran through here, and a busy road makes a market. On 6 October 1372 King Louis I raised the settlement to a free royal town: a town answerable to the king alone rather than to a landlord, electing its own council, judging its own people and holding its own fairs. The same king ordered it walled, and the surviving stretches of wall and the gate tower are that decision made visible. In exchange the town paid the crown directly and had to defend itself — which is exactly what it did for the next three hundred years.Štrnáste storočie je časom, keď sa zo Skalice stáva Skalica. Šiesteho októbra 1372 povýšil kráľ Ľudovít I. osadu na slobodné kráľovské mesto: mesto, ktoré sa zodpovedalo priamo kráľovi, nie zemepánovi, volilo si vlastnú radu, súdilo si vlastných ľudí a držalo si vlastné jarmoky. Ten istý kráľ prikázal mesto opevniť a zachované úseky hradieb s bránovou vežou sú tým rozhodnutím, ktoré vidno dodnes. Mesto za to platilo priamo korune a muselo sa samo ubrániť — a presne to nasledujúcich tristo rokov robilo.
