Šamorín sits just below the gap where the Danube leaves the Carpathians, slows down and begins dropping the gravel that built the island. In Roman times this river was a state frontier: the empire's fort of Gerulata stood a short way upstream at what is now Rusovce, on the imperial bank, and this side was Barbaricum — land the legions watched but never governed. Slavs settled the island from the sixth century, farming and fishing among its branches and marshes. Everything the town later became — a port, a market, and in our own time a dyke with a reservoir behind it — follows from standing on this exact stretch of river.Šamorín leží tesne pod bránou, ktorou Dunaj vychádza z Karpát, spomaľuje a začína ukladať štrk, z ktorého je celý ostrov. V rímskych časoch bola táto rieka štátnou hranicou: neďaleko proti prúdu, v dnešných Rusovciach, stála rímska pevnosť Gerulata na cisárskom brehu a táto strana bola Barbaricum — územie, ktoré légie strážili, ale nikdy nespravovali. Od 6. storočia ostrov osídlili Slovania, ktorí gazdovali a rybárčili medzi riečnymi ramenami a mokraďami. Všetko, čím sa mesto neskôr stalo — prístav, trh a v našich časoch hrádza so zdržou za ňou —, vyplýva z toho, že stojí práve na tomto úseku rieky.
