In 1683 the Ottoman army marched up the Danube towards Vienna, and the kuruc rebels of Imrich Thököly — Hungarian nobles in revolt against the Habsburgs, allied to the sultan for the occasion — were campaigning across the north of the kingdom. In that year Šamorín burned. The sources say the fire happened during those campaigns but do not name who started it, and it is worth resisting the usual local shortcut that 'the Turks did it': across Slovakia, fires in this period were just as often the work of imperial soldiers, of rebel troops, or of plain accident.
