After the defeat at Mohács in 1526 the Ottomans took the centre of the kingdom, and what remained of Royal Hungary moved its capital to Bratislava, where the kings were crowned from 1563. That was the end of Šamorín as a place that mattered: a capital twenty kilometres upstream drew off its trade, its ships and its ambitious people, and in 1589 the town lost its royal status and sank back to being a market town on somebody's estate. The Reformation swept the island in the same century and the old parish church of St Mary passed to the Reformed — Calvinist — congregation, which has held it ever since; that is why a medieval Catholic building is now a Protestant one with whitewashed walls. Its medieval paintings survived under later plaster and were uncovered only in 1954, which is the one respect in which losing turned out well.Po porážke pri Moháči roku 1526 obsadili Osmani stred kráľovstva a zvyšok kráľovského Uhorska presunul hlavné mesto do Bratislavy, kde sa od roku 1563 aj korunovalo. Tým sa skončil Šamorín ako miesto, na ktorom záležalo: hlavné mesto dvadsať kilometrov proti prúdu si stiahlo obchod, lode aj ctižiadostivých ľudí a roku 1589 mesto stratilo kráľovské výsady a kleslo späť na mestečko na cudzom panstve. V tom istom storočí prešla ostrovom reformácia a starý farský kostol Panny Márie pripadol reformovanej — kalvínskej — cirkvi, ktorá ho drží dodnes; preto je stredoveká katolícka stavba dnes protestantským kostolom s bielenými stenami. Stredoveké maľby sa pod neskoršou omietkou zachovali a odkryli ich až roku 1954 — a to je jediná vec, v ktorej sa prehra vyplatila.
