After February 1948 everything was nationalised, and extraction at Gbely ran on under the state company Nafta while the field slowly emptied — which is what every oil field eventually does. What replaced the oil was storage: the porous rock the crude and the gas had come out of could be refilled with imported natural gas and drawn on in winter. It is a neat piece of engineering, and it is the reason the town still has an industry after its own resource was gone. Underground storage, gas treatment and the maintenance engineering around them are what Gbely does to this day.Po februári 1948 sa všetko znárodnilo a ťažba v Gbeloch pokračovala pod štátnym podnikom Nafta, kým sa ložisko pomaly vyprázdňovalo — čo napokon urobí každé ropné pole. Ropu nahradilo skladovanie: poréznu horninu, z ktorej ropa a plyn vyšli, bolo možné znova naplniť dovezeným zemným plynom a v zime z nej čerpať. Je to elegantné inžinierske riešenie a je to dôvod, prečo má mesto priemysel aj po tom, čo mu vlastná surovina došla. Podzemné zásobníky, úprava plynu a údržbárske strojárstvo okolo nich sú tým, čím sa Gbely živia dodnes.
