In 1547 a community of Habáns settled at Gbely. They were Anabaptists — a radical Reformation movement whose members refused infant baptism, oaths and military service, were persecuted almost everywhere for it, and lived in walled communal yards, holding property in common and living by skilled craft. At Gbely they grew hemp and pressed oil; the best-known Habán settlement in this corner of the country is at nearby Sobotište. The Habán yard at Gbely was burned in 1602, in a stretch of years when both Ottoman raiding parties and the armies of the Hungarian revolts were moving through Záhorie, and the town's own history names both.V roku 1547 sa v Gbeloch usadila komunita habánov. Boli to novokrstenci — radikálne reformačné hnutie, ktorého členovia odmietali krst detí, prísahu i vojenskú službu, takmer všade ich za to prenasledovali, a žili v ohradených spoločných dvoroch, majetok mali spoločný a živili sa remeslom. V Gbeloch pestovali konope a lisovali olej; najznámejší habánsky dvor v tomto kúte krajiny je v neďalekom Sobotišti. Gbelský habánsky dvor v roku 1602 vypálili — v rokoch, keď cez Záhorie prechádzali turecké záškodnícke oddiely aj vojská uhorských povstaní, a mesto vo svojich dejinách menuje oboje.
