Czechoslovakia was declared at the end of October 1918, and Gbely — Egbell no longer — became the young state's first and most important oil field. Production and the colony around it kept growing between the wars, and the works later ran under the state company Nafta, named with the older Slovak word for crude oil. An oil field is a strange thing to have in the middle of farmland: it brought engineers, trained workers, wages and an industrial way of thinking to a district that had known none of it. It also meant that the state paid close attention to a small town it would otherwise never have noticed.Koncom októbra 1918 vzniklo Československo a z Gbelov — už nie Egbellu — sa stalo prvé a najvýznamnejšie ropné ložisko mladého štátu. Ťažba aj kolónia okolo nej medzi vojnami rástli a podnik neskôr niesol názov Nafta, podľa staršieho slovenského slova pre surovú ropu. Ropné pole je uprostred poľnohospodárskej krajiny čudná vec: prinieslo inžinierov, vyučených robotníkov, mzdy a priemyselné myslenie do okresu, ktorý nič také nepoznal. A tiež znamenalo, že štát pozorne sledoval malé mesto, ktoré by si inak nikdy nevšimol.
