The Slovak National Uprising began on 29 August 1944 and held a large part of central Slovakia into late October; western Slovakia, Gbely included, stayed under German control throughout, and German troops occupied the country. The end came with the front. Bratislava fell on 4 April 1945 and the Soviet and Romanian advance moved north-west up Záhorie through the first half of April. What the war left behind in this particular corner was a river frontier that would stay shut for another forty-four years.Slovenské národné povstanie sa začalo 29. augusta 1944 a do konca októbra držalo veľkú časť stredného Slovenska; západné Slovensko vrátane Gbelov zostalo po celý čas pod nemeckou kontrolou a krajinu obsadili nemecké vojská. Koniec priniesol až front. Bratislava padla 4. apríla 1945 a sovietsky a rumunský postup sa v prvej polovici apríla valil Záhorím na severozápad. V tomto kúte krajiny zanechala vojna riečnu hranicu, ktorá zostala zavretá ďalších štyridsaťštyri rokov.
