Gbely first appear in writing in 1392. The village belonged to the estate of Holíč — the fortress that guarded a crossing of the Morava on the frontier with Moravia — and its lord was whoever held that fortress: through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the estate passed through the hands of great families, among them Stibor of Stiboricz, one of King Sigismund's most powerful men, and later the Schlicks. The German and Hungarian name of the place was Egbell, and it stuck: the oil field found here five hundred years later is still called the Egbell field in old scientific papers. Nothing about the village was unusual, which is worth saying plainly, because everything unusual about it is modern.Gbely sa prvý raz spomínajú v roku 1392. Dedina patrila k holíčskemu panstvu — k pevnosti, ktorá na hranici s Moravou strážila brod cez rieku Moravu — a jej pánom bol vždy ten, kto držal Holíč: v 14. a 15. storočí prešlo panstvo cez ruky veľkých rodov, medzi nimi Stibora zo Stiboríc, jedného z najmocnejších mužov kráľa Žigmunda, a neskôr Šlikovcov. Nemecký a maďarský názov obce znel Egbell a udržal sa: ropné ložisko, ktoré tu našli o päťsto rokov neskôr, sa v starých odborných prácach dodnes volá egbellské. Na dedine nebolo nič výnimočné — a treba to povedať priamo, lebo všetko výnimočné na nej je moderné.
