Holíč first appears in writing in 1205, under the name Wywar, which is Hungarian for "new castle". A name like that says two things at once: that a fortification was already here, and that it was new enough for people to still be calling it new. What stood on the low ground was a water castle — a fort defended not by height but by marsh and river arms all around it. Its job was the crossing of the Morava, which was the western edge of the Kingdom of Hungary; on the far bank began Moravia, and behind that the Czech lands.Prvý raz sa Holíč objavuje v písomnostiach v roku 1205, pod menom Wywar, čo po maďarsky znamená „nový hrad".
