In 1728 Ján Baltazár Magin, the parish priest of Dubnica, published a Latin book usually called simply the Apológia — a defence of Trenčín county and of the Slovaks. He was answering a law professor in Trnava who had written that the Slovaks were a conquered people with no claim to the rights they held. Magin argued that they had been here first and were nobody's subjects by right of conquest. It is one of the earliest works of Slovak national writing, his patron was the Illésházy lord of the manor across the road, and Magin died in Dubnica in 1735.V roku 1728 vydal dubnický farár Ján Baltazár Magin latinský spis, ktorému sa zvyčajne hovorí jednoducho Apológia – obranu Trenčianskej stolice a Slovákov. Odpovedal ním trnavskému profesorovi práva, ktorý napísal, že Slováci sú podmanený národ bez nároku na práva, ktoré držia. Magin mu oponoval, že Slováci tu boli prví a nikomu nepatria právom dobyvateľa. Je to jedno z najstarších diel slovenského národného písomníctva, jeho mecenášom bol Ilešházi z kaštieľa oproti a Magin v roku 1735 v Dubnici aj zomrel.
