History of Tematín CastleDejiny — Tematínsky hrad

Tematín is a castle with no road to it. It was put on this ridge of the Považský Inovec because of the road below — the route up the Váh that every army and every merchant had to use — and it was wrecked, three centuries ago, because of a war over who would rule Hungary.K Tematínu nevedie nijaká cesta. Postavili ho na tomto hrebeni Považského Inovca kvôli ceste pod ním — trase popri Váhu, ktorou musela prejsť každá armáda i každý kupec — a pred tromi storočiami ho zničila vojna o to, kto bude vládnuť Uhorsku.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov

  1. c. 1242 – 1250okolo 1242 – 1250 Built because of the MongolsPostavený pre Mongolov

In 1241 and 1242 a Mongol army destroyed the royal army of Hungary and rode across the kingdom, and King Béla IV came out of it convinced that earth ramparts and wooden palisades were worthless. He pressed his nobles to build in stone, high up, where cavalry could not follow — and Tematín is a textbook case: Slovak sources date its foundation to immediately after the invasion, on the site of an older hradisko, an earth-and-timber hillfort that had stood here before. So Tematín was not destroyed by the Mongols. It exists because of them. Its job was to watch the Váh road far below, and the reason it is so hard to reach today is exactly the reason it was worth building.V rokoch 1241 a 1242 mongolské vojsko zničilo uhorskú kráľovskú armádu a prešlo celým kráľovstvom.

  2. 1270 · 1272 · to 13211270 · 1272 · do roku 1321 The first document, and then Matúš ČákPrvá listina a potom Matúš Čák

The castle first appears in writing in 1270, and not peacefully: the record concerns an attempt by King Béla IV to take it from the man who held it. Two years later, in 1272, Béla's son Stephen V, by then king himself, confirmed that 1270 charter to its holder, a man named Michal. It is a small window onto something much bigger — the long quarrel between Béla and his son that split the kingdom in the 1260s and was fought partly over who got which castle. At the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries Tematín came under Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the oligarch who ruled the whole north-west as though it were his own country; after his death in 1321 it went back to the crown, and its frontline importance began to fade.

  3. 1348 – early 1500s1348 – začiatok 16. storočia One family for a century and a halfJeden rod na poldruha storočia

In 1348 King Louis I gave the Tematín estate to Mikuláš Kont, one of the great officers of his court, together with a long list of villages under the mountain; Kont died in 1367. When his widow died in 1406 the estate passed to their son, and from him descended the Újlaki family — Ilockovci in Slovak — who held Tematín until their line died out early in the sixteenth century. That is a very long run for one castle in one family's hands, and it shows in the building: the walls you climb to are not one castle but a century and a half of additions. By the end of it Tematín was less a border fortress than the strongpoint of a large landed estate.Roku 1348 daroval kráľ Ľudovít I. tematínske panstvo Mikulášovi Kontovi, jednému z popredných hodnostárov svojho dvora, aj s dlhým zoznamom dedín pod horou; Kont zomrel roku 1367.

  4. 20 July 1524 · after 152620. júl 1524 · po roku 1526 Pawned for twenty-five thousand goldZaložený za dvadsaťpäťtisíc zlatých

On 20 July 1524 King Louis II pawned Tematín to his treasurer Alexej Turzo for 25,000 gold pieces. A king pawning castles is a king who cannot pay his soldiers, and two years later the reason became brutally clear: at Mohács in 1526 the Ottoman army destroyed the Hungarian army and that same king died in the retreat, and the kingdom broke into three. The Ottoman frontier settled well to the south of here, so Tematín never became a front-line fortress — but the Váh road it watched turned into the supply route behind that frontier, which kept the castle worth holding. Ownership went on changing, as it did everywhere: in this century a castle was as much a financial asset as a military one.20. júla 1524 založil kráľ Ľudovít II.

  5. 1665 – 22 January 17101665 – 22. január 1710 A rebel commander was born in this castleV tomto hrade sa narodil veliteľ povstania

In 1665 a boy was born inside these walls: Mikuláš Bercsényi — Miklós, in the form the documents use — whose family then held Tematín. He grew up to become the second man of the Rákóczi uprising, the great anti-Habsburg revolt that began in 1703 and for years controlled most of today's Slovakia. When the rising began to fail, imperial columns worked their way up the Váh and dealt with the castles of its commanders one after another; the kuruc army had already been broken at Trenčín on 3 August 1708. On 22 January 1710 Bercsényi got out of his own besieged castle; the garrison he left behind negotiated for three days and then surrendered. He died in exile in the Ottoman Empire in 1725 and never came home.

  6. after 1710po roku 1710 Why nobody ever rebuilt itPrečo ho už nikto neobnovil

What imperial forces did to Tematín after the surrender is told differently in different places: some accounts say the castle was burnt out, others that it was pulled down, and the association that looks after it today says simply that imperial troops damaged it in 1710. The disagreement matters less than the policy behind it, which was the same everywhere — after the uprising, imperial commanders deliberately wrecked castles that rebels might use again. That, and not the Turks, is the real reason so many Slovak castles are ruins. And nobody rebuilt Tematín afterwards, because by the eighteenth century a roofless fortress an hour's climb above the valley was of no use to anyone who could instead put up a warm manor house on the flat.Čo s Tematínom po kapitulácii urobili cisárske jednotky, sa podáva rôzne: niektoré správy hovoria, že hrad vypálili, iné, že ho rozborili, a združenie, ktoré sa oň dnes stará, uvádza jednoducho, že ho cisárske vojská roku 1710 poškodili.

  7. 29 August 1944 · April 194529. august 1944 · apríl 1945 The ruin took no part; the mountain didZrúcanina sa nezúčastnila, hora áno

By the Second World War Tematín had been a roofless shape among beech trees for two hundred years, and it played no part in the fighting. The mountain under it did. From 1939 to 1945 this was the Slovak State, allied to Nazi Germany. After the Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 the wooded Považský Inovec became partisan country, and villagers who fed or hid partisans risked being shot for it. The front came up the Váh in the first days of April 1945, with Soviet and Romanian troops driving the German army north past these hills.

  8. since 2007od roku 2007 Volunteers, one summer at a timeDobrovoľníci, leto za letom

Since 2007 a civic association has been researching and conserving Tematín, running summer work camps up on the ridge: clearing rubble, sorting stone, mixing mortar and capping the wall tops so that rain cannot finish what the imperial army started. There is still no road, and there is not going to be one — everything, down to each bag of lime, comes up on foot. That work has made Tematín one of the better-known volunteer restoration sites in western Slovakia, and it is the reason there are still walls here to visit. The fire took a day; the forest took two hundred years; getting the castle back is being done one summer at a time.
