Castles and lordsHrady a páni
Tematín CastleTematínsky hrad
The castle first appears in writing in 1270, and not peacefully: the record concerns an attempt by King Béla IV to take it from the man who held it. Two years later, in 1272, Béla's son Stephen V, by then king himself, confirmed that 1270 charter to its holder, a man named Michal. It is a small window onto something much bigger — the long quarrel between Béla and his son that split the kingdom in the 1260s and was fought partly over who got which castle. At the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries Tematín came under Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the oligarch who ruled the whole north-west as though it were his own country; after his death in 1321 it went back to the crown, and its frontline importance began to fade.
