In 1241 and 1242 a Mongol army destroyed the royal army of Hungary and rode across the kingdom, and King Béla IV came out of it convinced that earth ramparts and wooden palisades were worthless. He pressed his nobles to build in stone, high up, where cavalry could not follow — and Tematín is a textbook case: Slovak sources date its foundation to immediately after the invasion, on the site of an older hradisko, an earth-and-timber hillfort that had stood here before. So Tematín was not destroyed by the Mongols. It exists because of them. Its job was to watch the Váh road far below, and the reason it is so hard to reach today is exactly the reason it was worth building.V rokoch 1241 a 1242 mongolské vojsko zničilo uhorskú kráľovskú armádu a prešlo celým kráľovstvom. Kráľ Belo IV. z toho vyšiel s presvedčením, že hlinené valy a drevené palisády nie sú na nič, a začal tlačiť na šľachtu, aby stavala z kameňa a vysoko, kam sa jazda nedostane. Tematín je učebnicový príklad: slovenské pramene kladú jeho vznik bezprostredne po vpáde, na miesto staršieho hradiska, teda zemno-dreveného opevnenia, ktoré tu stálo predtým. Tematín teda Mongoli nezničili — existuje vďaka nim. Jeho úlohou bolo strážiť cestu popri Váhu hlboko pod ním, a to, prečo sa k nemu dnes tak ťažko dostáva, je presne to, prečo sa ho oplatilo postaviť.
