In 1348 King Louis I gave the Tematín estate to Mikuláš Kont, one of the great officers of his court, together with a long list of villages under the mountain; Kont died in 1367. When his widow died in 1406 the estate passed to their son, and from him descended the Újlaki family — Ilockovci in Slovak — who held Tematín until their line died out early in the sixteenth century. That is a very long run for one castle in one family's hands, and it shows in the building: the walls you climb to are not one castle but a century and a half of additions. By the end of it Tematín was less a border fortress than the strongpoint of a large landed estate.Roku 1348 daroval kráľ Ľudovít I. tematínske panstvo Mikulášovi Kontovi, jednému z popredných hodnostárov svojho dvora, aj s dlhým zoznamom dedín pod horou; Kont zomrel roku 1367. Na jeden hrad a jeden rod je to veľmi dlhý čas a vidno to na stavbe: múry, ku ktorým vystúpite, nie sú jeden hrad, ale poldruha storočia prístavieb. Ku koncu tohto obdobia už Tematín nebol ani tak pohraničnou pevnosťou ako oporným bodom veľkého pozemkového panstva.
