About 1,330 people live in Ždiar today, and by one count quoted in the village's own account every adult speaks the Goral dialect while only about half the children still keep it. That is the clearest measure of what is actually at risk here, and it is not the buildings: a house can be repaired, a way of speaking cannot be put back once a generation stops using it. The village lies inside the Tatra National Park, most of the Belianske Tatry behind it are closed to walkers for nature protection, and the settlements of Javorina and Podspády further up the road towards the frontier belong to the same municipality.
