From the nineteenth century the villagers of Ždiar began to earn from travellers as well as from sheep — tourism is listed among the trades of the village from that century onwards. The road over the saddle had always carried carts towards Poland; now it began to carry walkers towards the Belianske Tatry, and a household with a spare room and a cow found a second income. That is worth knowing before you judge modern Ždiar: letting rooms to strangers is not something that happened to this village recently, it is a tradition several generations deep, and it is the reason the place adapted so readily when mass tourism arrived a century later.Od 19. storočia začali Ždiarčania zarábať nielen na ovciach, ale aj na cestujúcich — cestovný ruch sa od tohto storočia uvádza medzi obecnými zamestnaniami. Cesta cez sedlo vždy vozila náklady do Poľska; teraz začala voziť turistov k Belianskym Tatrám a gazdovstvo s izbou navyše a s kravou našlo druhý príjem. Oplatí sa to vedieť skôr, než dnešný Ždiar odsúdite: prenajímanie izieb cudzím ľuďom nie je to, čo sa tejto obci prihodilo nedávno, ale tradícia hlboká niekoľko generácií — a práve preto sa obec o storočie neskôr tak ľahko prispôsobila masovému turizmu.
