The village's own account of its history has the name appearing as Stragar as early as 1282. A name in a medieval boundary charter is a fact about a document, not about a village: at that date this was almost certainly high forest and summer pasture belonging to a lowland estate, walked over by shepherds in July and empty in January. Note that the standard reference works date the settled community here to about 1590, three hundred years later, and that the two statements do not actually contradict each other — one is about a word on parchment, the other about people living somewhere all year.
