From 1960 Ždiar was administered as part of the town of Vysoké Tatry rather than as a municipality in its own right, a piece of socialist tidying that put a Goral village into a resort town's paperwork. In the 1970s and 1980s it became one of the most heavily used tourist destinations in the whole Tatra region, with as many as three thousand guests a day in summer. State holiday schemes sent entire workforces to the mountains, and Ždiar's old habit of letting a room met an organised, subsidised demand — which is when the new houses began filling the gaps between the old farmsteads along the road. Most of what a visitor now finds confusing about the village dates from those two decades.Od roku 1960 spravovali Ždiar ako súčasť mesta Vysoké Tatry, nie ako samostatnú obec — kus socialistického upratovania, ktorý goralskú dedinu zapísal do papierov kúpeľného mesta. V sedemdesiatych a osemdesiatych rokoch sa stal jedným z najvyužívanejších turistických miest celých Tatier, v lete tu bývalo aj tritisíc hostí denne. Štátna rekreácia posielala do hôr celé podniky a starý ždiarsky zvyk prenajať izbu narazil na organizovaný, dotovaný dopyt — a vtedy začali medzery medzi starými usadlosťami popri ceste zapĺňať nové domy. Väčšina toho, čo dnešnému návštevníkovi na obci nesedí, pochádza práve z týchto dvoch desaťročí.
