Ždiar sits on the only road over the shoulder of the Tatras into Poland, and almost everything about the village follows from that one fact: it was settled from the northern side of the mountains, it lived off sheep, forest and carting over the pass, and it was occupied by Polish soldiers twice within twenty years of the twentieth century. Its name comes from burning — žiar is a clearing burnt out of forest — which is exactly what the first families did to the valley floor. Today its Goral dialect is in more danger than any of its protected houses.Ždiar leží na jedinej ceste cez plece Tatier do Poľska a takmer všetko na obci vyplýva z tohto jediného faktu: osídlili ju zo severnej strany hôr, žila z oviec, z lesa a z furmanky cez sedlo a v dvadsiatom storočí ju v rozpätí dvadsiatich rokov dvakrát obsadili poľskí vojaci. Meno pochádza z vypaľovania — žiar je paseka vypálená z lesa — a presne to prvé rodiny s dnom doliny urobili. Dnes je goralské nárečie v obci ohrozenejšie než ktorýkoľvek z jej chránených domov.

The village's own account of its history has the name appearing as Stragar as early as 1282. A name in a medieval boundary charter is a fact about a document, not about a village: at that date this was almost certainly high forest and summer pasture belonging to a lowland estate, walked over by shepherds in July and empty in January. Note that the standard reference works date the settled community here to about 1590, three hundred years later, and that the two statements do not actually contradict each other — one is about a word on parchment, the other about people living somewhere all year. Learning to tell those apart is most of what reading local history well consists of.Vlastný výklad dejín obce uvádza meno Stragar už k roku 1282.
Juraj Horváth of Plaveč acquired the Nedeca estate after 1584 and had Ždiar settled through his officer František Lužinský; by 1590 it was a small permanent settlement of colonists holding on Wallachian law, the herding contract used all along the Carpathians. Thirteen families burned the forest off the valley floor and divided the ground into thirteen equal parts across the stream — the method that gave the place its name. The settlers were Gorals, highlanders whose dialect, dress and surnames belong to the Polish side of the mountains rather than to Spiš in the basin below. Three years later the same estate office founded Osturňa one valley east with Rusyn settlers instead, which is why two neighbouring villages have been different in language and church ever since.Juraj Horváth z Plavča získal po roku 1584 nedecké panstvo a Ždiar dal osídliť prostredníctvom svojho úradníka Františka Lužinského; roku 1590 to bolo malé trvalé sídlisko osadníkov na valaskom práve, pastierskej zmluve používanej po celých Karpatoch. Trinásť rodín vypálilo les na dne doliny a rozdelilo územie na trinásť rovnakých dielov cez potok — a od tohto spôsobu má obec meno. Osadníkmi boli gorali, horali, ktorých nárečie, kroj i priezviská patria skôr poľskej strane hôr než Spišu v kotline pod nimi.
In 1787 Ždiar had 120 houses and 794 people; in 1828, 155 houses and 1,118. Grain barely ripens at this height, so a household lived on sheep and cattle taken up to the high pasture, on the forest — charcoal burning is listed among the village trades — on potatoes, and on carting goods over the pass into Poland. Two hundred years of that produced the building you look at from the road: the Ždiar farmstead is a closed courtyard, two low log houses facing each other across a yard, linked by outbuildings and entered through a gate, so what the street sees is a wall and a doorway rather than a front. Animals, fodder, tools and people all had to be inside one wall in a place where winter is long and help is far away.Roku 1787 mal Ždiar 120 domov a 794 obyvateľov, roku 1828 už 155 domov a 1 118 ľudí.
From the nineteenth century the villagers of Ždiar began to earn from travellers as well as from sheep — tourism is listed among the trades of the village from that century onwards. The road over the saddle had always carried carts towards Poland; now it began to carry walkers towards the Belianske Tatry, and a household with a spare room and a cow found a second income. That is worth knowing before you judge modern Ždiar: letting rooms to strangers is not something that happened to this village recently, it is a tradition several generations deep, and it is the reason the place adapted so readily when mass tourism arrived a century later. Cesta cez sedlo vždy vozila náklady do Poľska; teraz začala voziť turistov k Belianskym Tatrám a gazdovstvo s izbou navyše a s kravou našlo druhý príjem.
Until the end of the nineteenth century the Ždiar house was a single space: one heated room in which a family cooked, slept, worked and kept what mattered. From about 1892 the plan changed to a hall and a chamber, so the house gained an entrance passage and a second room — cold storage, a place to put a guest, somewhere that was not full of smoke. It is a small technical change and it marks a real one: a village with a little more money and a little more contact with the world outside the pass. The log walls with their limewashed joints and the painted boards on the gables are the surface everyone photographs; the change of plan behind them is the part that tells you how people actually lived.Do konca 19. storočia bol ždiarsky dom jediným priestorom: jedna vykurovaná izba, v ktorej rodina varila, spala, pracovala a držala všetko dôležité.
When Austria-Hungary collapsed in 1918 the new Czechoslovak and Polish states both claimed the mountain districts, and Polish troops entered Ždiar — as they entered Kežmarok — before Allied pressure created a neutral zone under French supervision and the frontier was fixed by the Conference of Ambassadors on 28 July 1920. It happened a second time on the eve of the Second World War: between 24 and 30 November 1938, with Czechoslovakia broken by the Munich agreement, Poland annexed 226 square kilometres of northern Slovak territory, and Polish soldiers were in Ždiar again. On 21 November 1939, after Slovakia had taken part in Germany's attack on Poland, the strip was handed back with a great deal more besides, and on 20 May 1945 the 1920 line was restored. The village did not move an inch; the state around it changed four times.Po rozpade Rakúsko-Uhorska roku 1918 si horské okresy nárokovali nové Československo aj Poľsko a poľské vojská vstúpili do Ždiaru — tak ako do Kežmarku —, kým tlak dohodových mocností nevytvoril neutrálne pásmo pod francúzskym dozorom a veľvyslanecká konferencia 28. júla 1920 hranicu neurčila. O druhý raz sa to zopakovalo v predvečer druhej svetovej vojny: medzi 24. a 30. novembrom 1938, keď mníchovská dohoda rozbila Československo, zabralo Poľsko 226 štvorcových kilometrov severného Slovenska a poľskí vojaci boli v Ždiari znova.
Ždiar's own account of its history says plainly that the village supported and hid partisans during the Slovak National Uprising, and helping them was punishable by death. The Uprising began on 29 August 1944, but in Spiš the German side had the advantage from the first day: around 1,500 Spiš Germans were gathered at Kežmarok on 29 and 30 August, armed and formed into Heimatschutz units, and the insurgents failed to take the town; the Germans killed twenty-two people there in September. A Goral village on the Polish border with forest at its back was exactly the kind of place fighters came down into for food, and exactly the kind of place that paid for it.Vlastný výklad dejín Ždiaru hovorí bez okolkov, že obec počas Slovenského národného povstania podporovala a ukrývala partizánov — a pomoc im sa trestala smrťou.
From 1960 Ždiar was administered as part of the town of Vysoké Tatry rather than as a municipality in its own right, a piece of socialist tidying that put a Goral village into a resort town's paperwork. In the 1970s and 1980s it became one of the most heavily used tourist destinations in the whole Tatra region, with as many as three thousand guests a day in summer. State holiday schemes sent entire workforces to the mountains, and Ždiar's old habit of letting a room met an organised, subsidised demand — which is when the new houses began filling the gaps between the old farmsteads along the road. Most of what a visitor now finds confusing about the village dates from those two decades. Štátna rekreácia posielala do hôr celé podniky a starý ždiarsky zvyk prenajať izbu narazil na organizovaný, dotovaný dopyt — a vtedy začali medzery medzi starými usadlosťami popri ceste zapĺňať nové domy. Väčšina toho, čo dnešnému návštevníkovi na obci nesedí, pochádza práve z týchto dvoch desaťročí.
In 1977 four groups of folk buildings in Ždiar were declared a reserve of folk architecture. Notice the difference from Osturňa, where the whole village is protected as one: here it is clusters, because new building had already filled the road between them, and that is exactly why Ždiar reads as old and new at once. Around 127 items stand on the monument list, most of them log farmsteads with their barns, stables and outbuildings, along with the Roman Catholic parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and a couple of windlass wells. One dwelling is kept as a small private museum of local living, its rooms furnished as they were used; opening depends on the family rather than on posted hours.Roku 1977 vyhlásili štyri zoskupenia ľudových stavieb v Ždiari za pamiatkovú rezerváciu ľudovej architektúry. Všimnite si rozdiel oproti Osturni, kde je chránená celá obec ako jeden celok: tu ide o zoskupenia, lebo cestu medzi nimi už predtým zaplnila nová zástavba — a práve preto pôsobí Ždiar starým a novým naraz. V zozname pamiatok stojí asi 127 položiek, väčšinou zrubových usadlostí s maštaľami, humnami a hospodárskymi stavbami, a k tomu rímskokatolícky farský kostol Navštívenia Panny Márie a niekoľko rumpálových studní.
About 1,330 people live in Ždiar today, and by one count quoted in the village's own account every adult speaks the Goral dialect while only about half the children still keep it. That is the clearest measure of what is actually at risk here, and it is not the buildings: a house can be repaired, a way of speaking cannot be put back once a generation stops using it. The village lies inside the Tatra National Park, most of the Belianske Tatry behind it are closed to walkers for nature protection, and the settlements of Javorina and Podspády further up the road towards the frontier belong to the same municipality. The courtyards are working yards in private hands — look from the road, and ask before you go through a gate.V Ždiari dnes žije okolo 1 330 ľudí a podľa jedného údaja, ktorý uvádza vlastný výklad dejín obce, hovorí goralským nárečím každý dospelý, no z detí si ho udržiava už len asi polovica.
