ŠtrbaŠtrba
The first document to name the place is from 1280, where it is written Chorba; later hands write Chorba again (1286), Chirbans (1290), Sorba (1773) and Sstrba (1786), and the spelling Štrba is only fixed in 1920. A first mention is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived. By 1280 a locator — a settlement contractor working for the landlord, in this case a man named Hotta — had brought in a pastoral population: shepherds rather than ploughmen, because at over eight hundred metres grass grows reliably and wheat does not. Bohumír's descendants split into three noble families, the Szentiványi, the Szmrecsányi and the Bán, and their three stars are still on the village's coat of arms. A church already stood here in the thirteenth century.
