Podolinec today is a town of about three thousand people living on sawmilling and timber, building trades, some food processing and a great deal of commuting to Stará Ľubovňa, Kežmarok and Poprad. Since Slovakia and Poland both entered the Schengen area in December 2007 the border up the valley has had no checkpoint on it at all — which, for a valley divided by a frontier of one kind or another since the Middle Ages, is genuinely new. What fills a day here is what lies around the town: Ľubovňa castle and its open-air museum, the Zamagurie villages, and the Dunajec gorge in the Pieniny, where raftsmen still work the border river.Podolínec má dnes okolo troch tisíc obyvateľov a žije z píl a dreva, zo stavebníctva, z trochy potravinárstva a najmä z dochádzania do Starej Ľubovne, Kežmarku a Popradu. Odkedy Slovensko aj Poľsko vstúpili v decembri 2007 do schengenského priestoru, na hranici hore dolinou nie je nijaká kontrola — a to je pre dolinu, ktorú od stredoveku delila hranica jedného či druhého druhu, naozaj novinka. Deň tu zaplní to, čo leží okolo mesta: Ľubovniansky hrad so skanzenom, dediny Zamaguria a prielom Dunajca v Pieninách, kde pltníci dodnes vozia ľudí po pohraničnej rieke.
